Alarming increase in sexual violence in conflict zones in the DRC, according to the UNJHRO

According to the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office in the DRC, cases of conflict-related sexual violence increased significantly in February 2024 compared to the previous month.

“The UNJHRO recorded 36 adult victims of VSLC (36 women) compared to 13 adult victims for the previous month. As in the previous month, members of armed groups were responsible for 94% of this sexual violence, with a total of 34 victims,” the UNJHRO indicated in its February press release.

This press release specifies that the provinces having recorded the greatest number of victims are Ituri and Tanganyika.
